Re: “Shoppers Without Borders: Boise's New Mobile Market

The produce comes from farmers who sell at the Boise Farmers' Market, and are also trying to make a living growing and selling food. Not to mention competing with the Wal-Marts of the world, whose employees are the ones using food stamps so that Wal-Mart can get away with paying them a minimum wage that is in no way a living wage. And competing with cheap grocery store processed foods, which our government also systematically subsidizes. I think the grocery stores can probably handle the competition.

Re: “The Effects of Agriculture on Idaho's Water Usage

I went to this presentation too, it was interesting but I didn't like the overall message that agriculture is a waste of water. Rhode Island's per capita water useage is lower than ours because IT RAINS THERE, I wonder if the rain water that falls on their crops is included in their water use total? Much of our irrigation water also comes from precipitation, but in the form of stored snow melt rather than rain. It's important to remember that the water we drink and the water we irrigate with aren't the same water. So, I don't really think it's fair to say that Rhode Islanders are conserving water and we're wasting it.

As an easterner turned farmer and irrigation water user in the west, I think our system of delivering water to so many desert farms is amazing. There are certainly a number of problems, including chemicals and weed seeds in flood irrigation runoff, but let's not make farmers the bad guys here. Let's talk about how much drinkable, city water is wasted watering lawns, not how much water farmers are supposedly "wasting" to grow our food.

Re: “Where Citydesk is Ensnared in a Permitting Nightmare of his Own Making

Nathaniel, just so you know, the city is also shutting down the Tuesday night market at Edward's Greenhouse. Something about not having the right kind of parking lot. How's that for supporting urban agricultural and the general livability of our city? Now I don't have anywhere to do our CSA pickup :( Katie
