Kick-Off Party People

Skimming the 2009 line up for the annual Sunday summer concert series Music From Stanley, I was struck by how misleading the fest’s name is. As my eyes darted down the list—past Pendleton, Oregon’s James Dean Kindle and the East Oregon Playboys, Brooklyn, New York’s Carrie Rodriguez and Springfield, Illinois’ Ben Bedford—I couldn’t find a single act from Stanley. Perhaps it should be renamed: Bands From All Over Playing Outside at the Scenic Redfish Lake Lodge in Stanley? Or maybe just: Music In Stanley?

But prepositional nitpickery aside, in order for Music From Stanley organizers to bring these rad acts out to the mountainous, pine tree-populated town of Stanley each weekend, they have to raise a little coin. So, this Friday, June 5, at 6 p.m., they're having their second annual season kickoff fundraiser at the Linen Building.

Musical acts like James Orr, Dan Costello, Low-fi, Bernie Reilly and Kelly Lynae will perform alongside the wailing wee lads and lasses of the Boise Rock School. In addition to silent auction items from Josh Ritter, The River Company and other local artists, there will also be tons of sweet raffle loot from the Record Exchange, Oakley Sunglasses, World Cycle, Prestige Skateboards and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.

There have also been murmurs of a pinata filled with Tootsie Pops. If, you know, that's your thing.
