LED could begin performing out of the former downtown location of Alloway Electric in early 2019.

For several years, performing arts cooperative LED has had a home base on Boise Avenue, but on Thursday, the popular company announced plans to move into an iconic spot downtown, the Alloway Electric building at 15th and Grove streets.

"A lot of people don't know we're a full-time company doing things year-round," said LED filmmaker and Marketing Director Kyle Morck. "Having something centrally located we think will be really helpful."

At 2,479 square feet, the Alloway Electric building offers LED something it didn't have before: room for a performance space with seating for between 30 and 40 people. While the Boise Avenue space had room for rehearsals, there wasn't anywhere for the cooperative to show its stuff, and its performances instead took place at spots like The Egyptian Theatre and the Morrison Center. When LED launched its Interesting Failures video series, it decided the time had come for a change of scenery.

"[The Boise Avenue location] was a temporary solution, but it worked well to get us to where we are now," Morck said. "The big impetus was our weekly video series. As Lauren is working with dancers, it's hard for me to be in my space editing [video], and we ended up in a bad schedule of working around each other, which is why we started looking for new space."

Morck said rent at the new location will be marginally higher, but the $35,000 up-front cost associated with building out the performance space, sound and video editing bays will be steeper. LED plans to raise the funds from its community partners and the public.

If all goes as planned, LED could begin showing its work at small, live performances in the new space in early 2019.
