Magic City Hippies

The Olympic, Sunday, Jan. 20

If you only have time to listen to one song by Magic City Hippies, make it "Franny." Over 3 minutes and 16 seconds, we promise you'll fall in love with the elusive, magnetic girl who appears in it to drop off bags of weed, each time stepping to the sidewalk from a different car. The song is funky, sexy and just a little bit discordant. It's also the epitome of MCH's Miami-grown sound, which got its start on the streets. The group first called itself the Robby Hunter Band before stealing the moniker Magic City Hippies from its 2013 debut album. Under the new name, it put out Hippie Castle (New World Music Group, 2015), an EP that's equal parts movie soundtrack and house party pulse. Newer individual releases like "Franny," "Gunslingers" and "Body Like a Weapon" fit the same niche. For anyone suffering through a chilly Idaho January, MCH's appearance at The Olympic this week should feel like a long-awaited trip to the beach.
