Maria Taylor and Jonathan Rice with Nik Freitas, July 4, Neurolux

Most federal holidays shift a few days forward or back to make sure civil servants get a Monday off. But unless it actually falls on a Monday, the Fourth of July is, of course, always celebrated on July 4. This year, Independence Day is on a Friday, and while a few stalwart crazies will pack a cooler, sleeping bag, tent and a clandestine cache of M80s and head to the mountains, many who have the day off will probably snag a blanket and spend an hour watching the annual parade during the day, and an hour watching fireworks after dark. Another option for folks staying in town for the weekend is to check out Maria Taylor and Jonathan Rice with Nik Freitas at Neurolux.

Taylor and fellow musician Andy LeMaster recently released an acoustic EP titled Savannah Drive. The EP combines songs from Taylor's previous records 11:11 and Lynn Teeter Flower as well as some new tracks. Taylor's soft, sweet vocals combined with lush melancholy melodies are hypnotic and, apparently, popular. Her music has been featured on TV, and her voice has been featured on a handful of Bright Eyes' albums and shows.

While the pyrotechnics are going off outside, inside the talented Taylor and her tour companions Rice and Freitas (a personal favorite of this author), offer up a laid-back show you might expect from a trio of singer-songwriters. Or if you sit on the Neurolux patio, you'll still be able to hear the music and you might even see a firework or two.

July 4, $5, 9 p.m. Neurolux, 111 N. 11th St., 208-343-0886.
