Re: “World Center for Birds of Prey

I am surprised I am the first reviewer of WCBOP. The birds are magnificent, and there is an opportunity---every hour or so---to get (relatively) up-close to one of the birds.

Which bird is shown is the volunteer's choice. SOME of the birds do tolerate flash photography, but most do not!

There are educational exhibits and movies. These discuss the birds, of course; electric-pole design to minimize bird deaths; and other topics.

There are outdoor cages with birds, and a nice picnic area. It is on a hilltop, so there is a good view, and clean air!
And, there is a gift shop! What more could you want?
A library, you say? There is one, but it was closed when I was there.

Call ahead, or check their web site, because the hours are weird. Check a map, too, 'cause the location is just a teensy way out-of-town---from the highway, anyway.

Re: “The End of the (Mid)Line

Record companies are why many bands give away their music on Limewire or BitTorrent. The bands do not make any money from this, but they most certainly do not lose any!

The bands also get complete creative control, no suits looking over the band's shoulder!

People who like what they hear will go to the band's web site. They can buy albums---if the band has LPs, CDs, FLACs, etc., or they can check out the band's tour schedule, or buy band merchandise (You know: T-shirts, autographed photographs, and all that!). This is mentioned a few times in the comments section of this SlashDot thread:…

It is a sad time ANYtime a good band goes under. Rather than concentrate on the negative, "THE BAND IS DEAD!!", think about the good side: "I loved seeing them in person, and I still have this album of them. I hope their new lives are fulfilling them."

Re: “Excuses You Might Believe In

"How will they justify doing nothing?"

They won't. They will do nothing there, too.

Nancy Pelosi's pre-election "promises" disappeared without a trace.

My friend Mike, and I, one time were driving around, doing nothing special. Mike asked, "Why don't the Republicans put up a candidate against Pelosi?". I asked, "Pelosi's big claim to fame is that she sold out the Presidio. Can any Republican say he would not do that?"
Mike said, "No." I replied, "On everything else [This was in 2003], people figure she is OK. That is why there are zero Repubs put forth against her."

Ultimately, the Democratic Party serves the will of the same ultra-rich people as does the Republican Party. Unless something I would find amazing happens, our lot will simply worsen.

I cannot find the reference, but Daniel J. Boorstin, in his "The Americans", tells how the ideas of the Progressive Party were appropriated by the Democratic Party. Thus, so-called "Democratic ideals" are not Democratic, at all!
