Mat Kearney is heading back to Boise, and to hear him tell it, he’s grown up a little in the meantime.

“I realized I didn’t need to make every song a ‘young love story,'” reads his website biography. “I’m comfortable writing music from a perspective of having been around the block a few times, because that’s how I am in real life. The result is some beautiful, wise songs that sound like they’ve been well-traveled.”

Kearney walks the walk on his newest album, CRAZYTALK (Tomorrow Music, 2018), which will be the centerpiece of his Boise Music Festival show at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. Tracks like “Better Than I Used to Be”—which features EDM artist AFSHeeN—follow multiple storylines, passing from childhood through young love and into old age, and showcasing emotional as well as vocal range.
