Mike Kaplan Celebrates Love for Film with Rare, Foreign Movie Posters in Gotta Dance, Too

Feature film artist extraordinaire Mike Kaplan has one of the most formidable collections of movie posters on the planet. Long before he worked as art director for Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, Kaplan began collecting vintage posters and took a particular interest in foreign movie posters. Some of his favorites are Mine Lieder Mine Traume, Amerykaqnin w Paryzu and Wirujacy Seks. You probably known them better as The Sound of Music (translated to German), An American in Paris (Poland) and Dirty Dancing (Poland). Those and dozens more are included in Kaplan's new book, Gotta Dance, Too: The Art of the Dance Movie Poster, a follow-up to his 2004 bestseller Gotta Dance. The new book showcases posters from fourteen countries, including Belgium, the former Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain and Sweden.

Kaplan, whose credits also include The Whales of August (producer), Short Cuts (associate producer) and Never Apologize (director), will appear this Thursday, Nov. 15, at Boise's Rediscovered Books, where he'll sign copies of his new book and talk about his career and life-long fascination with movie posters.

"I remember the excitement of the hunt for the acquisition, the exhilaration in discovering a knockout design [and] the surprise in learning an unexpected aspect of movie history," Kaplan wrote in the forward to his new book. "The ideal movie poster is a microcosm of the movie itself, capturing with inventiveness, the feeling one has after leaving the cinema. It should be both a work of art and a souvenir of one's movie experience."
