Misuse of Funds Sends Former Sheriff to Jail, Suspends License of Bail Agent

The Idaho Department of Insurance announced Tuesday that it had suspended the license of a Treasure Valley bail agent. The department said Ann Marie Banda of Caldwell had mishandled consumer funds.

According to an department investigation, state officials said Banda had, at least on one occasion, deposited an insurance check into her own personal account when Idaho Insurance Code requires agents to deposit insurance premiums into a fiduciary fund. Additionally, the department alleged that Banda had made personal purchases from her fiduciary account more than once.

Banda's license was suspended for a year after which she will be eligible to apply for reinstatement.

Meanwhile, Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden announced that the former Jefferson County Sheriff, convicted of misusing public funds, has been ordered to 30 days in jail, three years of probation and a $2,500 fine. Blair Olsen was convicted on May 14 of three felony counts of misusing public funds.

Olsen was taken into custody after his sentencing and will begin serving his sentence immediately. There is a provision in the sentencing that Olsen may be released form jail after 15 days and also give him 60 days to complete 120 hours of community service.
