Mother Hips and Finn Riggins at AA5

Alive After Five continues to resuscitate Boiseans in the Eden-like enclosure of the Grove with rocking music and copious amounts of barley-based beverage flowing from the taps. AAF audiences will rock out particularly hard this Wednesday with Boise’s own experimental indie group Finn Riggins opening for San Francisco’s The Mother Hips.

Finn Riggins is a dynamic drum, synth and bass trio whose new album Vs. Wilderness is slated for release October 13. Described by their Portland-based label, Tender Loving Empire as “DIY road-warriors,” Finn Riggins racks up more miles on the road than most professional truckers.

In support of their new album, Finn Riggins will also be heading out on tour around the Northwest with another hard-working Boise band, Built to Spill, for six confirmed dates in November.

This week’s headliners, The Mother Hips, are a psychedelic crew of crackling pop-rockers who have been producing a meld of country, reggae and ’60s rock since their college days in Chico, CA, in the early 1990s.

The band released their newest album, Kiss the Crystal Flake in 2007, after releasing the 2004 EP, Red Tandy, which marked the end of their three-year-long musical hiatus. Pitchfork labeled Kiss the Crystal Flake “bread-and-butter rock ‘n’ roll,” going on to say:

“I can’t imagine anyone who followed Mother Hips in their initial run being unhappy with this … Kiss the Crystal Flake is the sound of a refreshed band making as solid an album as they ever have.”

5-8 p.m., FREE, The Grove Plaza, downtown Boise.
