Music Issue Xtra

More reads for the music industry wannabe

In honor of BW's Music Issue, here are a few more books about the music biz to put on a musician's "must-read" list:

The Business of Music, M. William Krasilovsky, John M. Gross, Sidney Schemel (Watson-Guptill Publications). Published since 1964, this book is a comprehensive guide of the "biz" part of the "music biz," with information on the legal, financial and economic side of the music industry. Widely available where books are sold.

Confessions of a Record Producer: How to Survive the Scams and Shams of the Music Business, Moses Avalon (Backbeat Books). This one is as much dish as how-to, but sometimes a perspective from the inside can be particularly enlightening (knowledge is power, if you can stomach it). Warning: This book may frighten emerging musicians right out of a career in the music industry. Widely available where books are sold.

The Indie Bible, David Wimble. In the words of one BW staffer and working musician, "This book has articles by experienced industry so and sos. Also a complete list of radio stations and media sources that will play and review your stuff." The books is available on its own Web site,, and in stores at Borders, Barnes & Noble, The Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Tower Records and Virgin Records.
