Swimming in a sea of schadenfreude

We're swimming in a sea of schadenfreude these days, and that's not such a good idea. Yes, we're happy as clams to see a certain wannabe weekly go down in flames. And to the numerous BW fans who wrote in with nearly-identical e-mail headlines of "DING DONG! The Witch is Dead!" well, you're all just plain adorable, but can you guys work on your originality? Or should I just be happy about gift horses and stop checking their teeth?

Onward, ever onward. While you're thumbing through the paper this week, go directly to our eye-opening feature story by Deanna Darr about the transformation of Garden City. It's convenient to think of ole GC as a pile of strip joints, trailer parks and mini-malls, but like most things convenient, that thinking is just plain wrong. The numbers alone might surprise you.

Please also note the ads scattered throughout the paper this week, reminding all of you clever, discerning and with-it readers to get ready to start voting for the annual Best of Boise issue. We're doing the whole kit and caboodle online this year through the series of tubes we call the Internet. We've been fixing glitches from previous years and hope to make this year's voting truly democratic, at least in an Iraqi parliament kind of way. So go to www.boiseweekly.com and gitcher vote on.
