Outdoor Educators plant flag at Boise State

Next week, Boise State hosts the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE) national conference. This is definitely a feather in the pith helmet of the Boise State Campus Recreation department.

AORE is the trade organization for professionals in the outdoor recreation industry and each year they gather professionals from around the country to discuss the importance of continuing outdoor recreation education for both educators and students. According to their Web site, AORE's mission is "to provide opportunities for professionals and students in the field of outdoor recreation and education to exchange information, promote the preservation and conservation of the natural environment, and address issues common to college, university, community, military and other not-for-profit outdoor recreation and education programs."

This 20th annual conference offers a number of pre- and post-conference workshops for industry professionals and for outdoor recreation students interested in becoming professionals themselves. Many of the workshops take place over a number of days and in various locations around Idaho. Examples are Tour de Hot, where attendees visit three natural hot springs in one day. There's Leave No Trace training that teaches professional outdoor educators LNT protocols and implementing that training in their own work. Workshops also include Climbing Wall Management, Student Development and more. Some of the workshops offered are limited to people registered for the entire AORE conference, but most are available to outdoor professionals and enthusiasts alike.

There will also be trade vendors available at the conference with information on the latest in outdoor recreational technology.

For more information on the AORE and time and cost of seminars and workshops available at the conference, visit http://rec.boisestate.edu/aore/.

Conference dates are Nov. 2-4. Pre-conference dates are Oct. 30-Nov. 1. The deadline for regular conference registration has passed, but late or walk-in registration continues through November 4.
