Over $120 Million in Unclaimed Idaho Property

"Last year, we paid out more than 12,000 claims totaling more than $5.5 million in unclaimed property."

More than $120 million remains in unclaimed Idaho properties.

According to the State Treasurer's office, an abundant number of unclaimed money and other assets remain on the books, but are considered lost or abandoned because the owner can't be located.

"Last year, we paid out more than 12,000 claims totaling more than $5.5 million in unclaimed property," said Idaho Treasurer Ron Crane. "Our unclaimed property division has consistently been paying out about 50 percent of the properties turned over to us every year."

Crane says Idaho law requires all state agencies, banks, publicly traded companies and even stores and restaurants to turn over money that they're unable to return to owners, and there has been no customer contact for five years. That's when the State of Idaho becomes custodian for the unclaimed property in perpetuity.

You can search the Idaho Unclaimed Property database at sto.idaho.gov and you can call the Treasurer's office at 208-332-2977 for more information.
