Re: “A Star Is Born ... Or Was He Manufactured?

Who could possibly care? If the kid is a manufactured "Phenom", he will become wildly successful for a short period, then disappear. If he actually has talent, he will go nowhere, since true talent just gets in the way of what our image-based entertainment industry and consumers demand. Or, if his parents are not just trying to make a quick buck off him, he might just have a chance to be someone if they go slow and give him the opportunity to develop.

Re: “Bands I Saw Last Week

Finally! Someone who actually REVIEWS BANDS! I've been in Boise for 11 years now, and have always been mystified by the Weekly's lack of reviews of actual shows. Sure, there are reviews of the music that local bands release, and pithy interviews with bands, but those things don't tell us how the bands really are. There are plenty of bands who can write a good song, and with time, money, and a good engineer/producer put out a good CD. But can they actually PLAY? Do they engage a crowd, or stand there with their backs to the audience, take way too long between songs, or just fail to acknowledge the audience at all? Do their tones suck? Or are they a treat to see?

The Boise music scene is full of talented musicians, but without someone turning a critical eye upon them, all they tend to hear is their friends/fans saying how great they are. And those complaining about the reviews should read them a bit closer. None was an out-and-out slam. Artists of any type need not have thin skins if they expect to improve. And what musician doesn't want to improve?

Re: “Legislature Gears Up

I am a cyclist and I believe that many of the road-sharing problems are due to inconsiderate cycling behavior. If there is a bike lane, get in it and stay in it. It was put there for you. Cars and trucks drive single-file when there is a single lane, bikes should do the same. Hill Road is not the place for cyclists to be riding 2 or 3 abreast. If there is no bike lane, ride as though there is one. I do. Wearing clothing covered with logos does not entitle you to hog the road, it certainly will not protect you from inattentive or aggressive motorists, and it sure as hell doesn't impress them. Sharing the road goes both ways - be courteous, ride safely. And motorists - give us a break (and as wide a berth as you can).
