Peculiaroso Virtuoso • The Decemberists in October and November, too

Peculiaroso Virtuoso

Guitar guru Leo Kottke makes a stop in Boise on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Egyptian Theatre. Kottke, whose recording career spans several decades, is like the David Copperfield of guitarists. Even watching him play live, it's hard to believe he can get so much sound out of some wood and six strings; you'll be wondering if he has another player or two accompanying him from the wings. Kottke is also able to coax something almost lyrical out of his guitar, making an audience think there just might be a vocalist hiding back there, too.

Thursday, Oct. 16, 8 p.m., $26. Egyptian Theatre, 700 W. Main St., 208-387-1273.

The Decemberists in October and November, too

Portland, Ore.-based Indie rock darlings The Decemberists are slated to release a series of singles titled Always a Bridesmaid. On their Web site, this series is explained as "songs that the Decemberists really loved but presciently felt they would not fit on the band's forthcoming LP."

The tracks are available in digital format and on vinyl, and come out in three installments of two or three tracks each: Volume I on October 14, Volume II on Nov. 4 and Volume III on Dec. 2. Volume I includes "Valerie Plame," —which the band is scheduled to perform Nov. 3 on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, the song's television debut—and "O New England." Volume II, features "Days of Elaine," "Days of Elaine (extended mix)" and "I'm Sticking with You." Volume III, includes "Record Year" and "Raincoat Song." A limited edition version of the singles is available with pre-order at decemberistsshop.com.
