The growing popularity of the Boise Airport's so-called "cell phone waiting area," where drivers can remain in their cars for arriving passengers without having to pay for parking, is in line for a major expansion.

When the Boise City Council meets later today, lawmakers will be asked to approve a $400,000 expenditure to relocate the cell phone lot. Currently, there are 14 curbside parking spots north of the parking garage and a few hundred feet from the airport arrival curb.

But officials say the 14 spaces don't have sufficient capacity, regularly causing overflows into traffic lanes. As a result, airport officials are proposing a new cell phone lot adjacent to the existing economy lot that would accommodate 50 parking spaces. Additionally, planners say the lot can expanded in the future if necessary.

The budget calls for one time costs for design ($40,000) and construction ($360,000).
