Playing with Big Bodogs

Playing with Big Bodogs

When Ripchain's bassist, Dan Garrett, entered the band in the international Bodog Battle of the Bands, none of his band mates were very enthusiastic about it. But that was before Ripchain found itself one of the less than 200 remaining contestants out of the nearly 5,000 bands that entered from 48 states.

Frontman Dave Ford said that the band has gone to Portland twice to perform in the Bodog battle, each time placing high enough to move on to the next round. He said that Ripchain is considered a judges' favorite and "out-of-town underdog" since many of the bands they've played against are from the area and have established fan bases and plenty of local support, something always important in a band battle.

When the band got to Portland, they hit the streets hard, selling tickets (which counted as ballots) and meeting people to get them out to the shows. That combined with Ripchain's self-described sound of "modern rock built on a foundation of old-school heavy metal" caught the judges' attention, and Ripchain is now one of 12 bands that will go on to compete in a semi-regional competition in Los Angeles in February. In Boise they'll play at the Bouquet with locals Lust Greeds Envy and Half the World. They'll also raffle off a Ripchain merch package with a ticket to the L.A. semifinals. If they place, the band will move on to the televised finals, where a win means a $1 million recording contract with Bodog and national exposure.

January 12, 9 p.m., $5. The Bouquet, 1010 W. Main St., 208-345-6605.
