Three Boise men are behind bars June 27, charged with felony malicious harassment—Idaho's hate crime statute—after allegedly targeting one of their victims based on race.

Boise police responded June 26 to reports of a fight near North Liberty and Butte streets at approximately 7:40 p.m. During their investigation, officers learned of a previous altercation between the suspects and victims.

During the first encounter, two of the suspects threatened and assaulted two juveniles walking down the street. During the second encounter, all three suspects were involved in making threatening comments to the victims. According to police, the threats were made "with the specific intent to intimidate or harass" one of the victims because of that person's race.

One of the suspects, Christopher Daniel, 29, of Boise, allegedly brandished a knife during the second encounter.

Police found suspects Christopher Daniel and Verdell  Daniel, 48, of Boise, at a nearby house. Shortly after leaving the house, officers stopped a vehicle driven by the third suspect, Thomas Caldwell, 27, of Boise, who they believed to be intoxicated. Field sobriety tests showed Caldwell's blood alcohol level was between .129 and .131, compared to the legal driving limit of .08.

All three were taken to Ada County Jail.

Christopher Daniel has been charged with felony malicious harassment, felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor battery; Verdell Daniel has been charged with felony malicious harassment; and Caldwell faces charges of felony malicious harassment, misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor driving under the influence.
