Prom Night

Much like I'm sure my junior prom date said about me after our less-than-special night was over, watching this film made for a completely underwhelming evening.

High-schooler Donna Keppel's (Brittany Snow, TV's American Dreams) senior year is ruined when her family is murdered in front of her by a psychotic, obsessed former teacher (Jonathan Schaech, That Thing You Do). When the killer later escapes from his asylum, he totally wrecks prom as he murders his way through Donna's friends in an attempt to win her heart.

Sadly, as near as I can tell, there's no connection to the '80s and early '90s series of films by the same name. There's no real story, either. It's basically the worst prom ever, and kids are getting whacked.

The rated version of the film is only PG-13, hence the obnoxious cut-aways that occur whenever someone's being gashed. However, undermining the rating is the film's glamorization of prom as a great time to drink and have sex.

The ending is abrupt, there are a few issues with believability—like the man-sized HVAC vent in an asylum cell's ceiling, and there are very few scary moments.

I find myself in the habit of saying that most horror movies are good enough to curb your craving for gore, but this one really isn't. If you want something high-school themed that will truly curdle your blood, take a look instead at my senior picture in the yearbook. I guarantee it's more frightening than this film.
