Riverwinds, Oct. 25, First Baptist Church

As the leaves change colors and the weather begins to chill in the City of Trees, concert-going opportunities tend to open up beyond rock shows in bars or clubs to include more orchestral and classical options.

The Boise-based chamber ensemble Riverwinds is a quintet originally formed in 2006 and made up of Cy Gilbert on flute, Beth Meade on oboe, Jessica Dean on clarinet, Kevin Hall on bassoon and Carolyn Langley on French horn. The members are all active musicians in other orchestras and ensembles and, as Riverwinds, perform a repertoire of standards and classical pieces reaching into jazz and pop genres to offer music with a broader appeal than listeners might expect from a brass and woodwind quintet fronted by a flutist. The group performed a program last month at the Idaho Black History Museum written exclusively by African-American composers including William Grant Still.

The upcoming Riverwinds concert includes a collaboration with guest pianist Kelsey Webb and features the works of Still, Franz Danzi, Malcolm Arnold and Theodore Blumer.

Saturday, Oct. 25, 3 p.m., adults $7, students and seniors $5. First Baptist Church, 607 N. 13th St. For more information, visit cygilbertflutist.com.
