The Brothers of the Baladi, August 18

There are some great shows coming up this week. Reckless Kelly plays Alive After Five on August 17 and again with Asleep At The Wheel on August 18 at the Idaho Botanical Garden. Favorites Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons play the Neurolux August 18 and Foma, The Runners and Gena Rowlands Band play there too on August 24. That's some hot stuff. But if you're looking for a band that plays traditional Middle-Eastern music with ethnic acoustic instruments mixed with Western sounds, vocals in seven languages and rhythms of an exotic nature, The Brothers of the Baladi is just what you want. Baladi is an Arabic word which means "people or folk." These virtuosos definitely play music of the people and they're kind enough to bring it to our little corner of the blue planet.

The Brothers of the B formed in 1975 and since then, the group has opened for some major names. According to their Web have opened for the likes of Leon Redbone, The Mamas and The Papas, Zachary Richard and Maria Muldaur. With hundreds of performances under their silk sashes, The Brothers of the Baladi is celebrating 30 years of international noise with a new CD release. Presence of the Past combines Turkish, Armenian, Arabic and original music and is the latest in a long line of releases. Each release is special and some are specialized. In 1998, they released a Christmas album on which they played instruments including kanoon, ney, oud, bouzouk, zurna, darbuka/tabla, zarb, riq, def and davul and covered songs such as "Deck the Halls," "Good King Wenceslas" and "Joy to the World," giving each classic carol a new world sound.

Their Thursday night performance promises their famous Baladi sound and also promises performances from guest dancers. And if you get to the Bouquet by 7 p.m., you can get a free belly dancing lesson. Just think how impressed your friends will be at your next cocktail party when you put on Presence of the Past, start shaking your money-maker and show them all just how worldly you are.

Thursday, August 18, 8 p.m., $5 single, $8 per couple, The Bouquet.
