Roadshow of the Week

Rodney Crowell, November 8, The Big Easy

On November 8, Rodney Crowell takes the Big Easy stage. Openers Will Kimbrough and Jedd Hughes, also guitarists in Crowell's band, will ready the crowd for a night of real American music.

Rodney Crowell is a name you may not know, but if you like country music even a little, there's a good chance you know his music. Tim McGraw recorded his "Please Remember Me." During the '70s, when Crowell played in the Emmylou Harris' Hot Band, he wrote "Leaving Louisiana In Broad Daylight" and "Ain't Living Long Like This." Lee Ann Womack sang Crowell's "Ashes By Now" and Keith Urban belted out "Making Memories Of Us," which was a No. 1 hit for Urban. Now, Crowell's taking his own music out on the road.

With his latest release, The Outsider, Crowell comes out of hibernation with a tour that covers two continents and almost 50 cities. He's a man with a mission. Crowell's songs marry rock, country, gospel and a little soul--his mission seems to be to welcome music lovers of all shapes and sizes into the fold. The title track from the album has a low, funky bass line and and Crowell's voice stands out high and on top of keyboards, sweet backing vocals and full guitar as a many fully aware of himself.

The lyrics for "The Outsider" set the tone for the rest of songs on the CD, which at times seem deeply personal and at others are deeply political. "Don't Get Me Started" is a tune that could just as easily be a rant by the guy sitting on a barstool next to you in your neighborhood pub: We ran into trouble scamming for oil/Now the whole Middle East is coming to a boil/It's the Muslims and Kurds and the Bedouin herds/The Palestinians and Arabs and the Jews in the news/There's so much to keep up with it jangles your head/And the whole situation's running way in the red/Don't get me started I'll like as not bend your ear ...

Get to the Big Easy on Tuesday and let Crowell get started. You'll be happy to let him bend your ear.

Tuesday, November 8, 7:30 p.m., $15, with openers Jedd Hughes and Will Kimbrough, The Big Easy, 416 S. 9th St.
