Romio's - Chapala #9 - Koi

Romios, oh Romios, where for art thou Romios?

Why, it's boldly flying a "Now Open" banner from the front of a remodeled former fast food joint in the Ross shopping center parking lot on Milwaukee, of course.

With a phonebook-sized menu, Romios Pizza and Pasta is a Mediterranean hybrid that lives up to its moniker in menu choices and throws in a few oh-so-Greek house specialties. Among the calamari, buffalo wings and breads on the appetizer menu, you'll find dolmades, tiropita and spanakopita, hummus and a hot-and-cold dish that's a hodgepodge of all things Greek on the starters list.

Wedged into the salads list right in between the Caesar and antipasto is a horiatiki salad and a Greek salad. Wade through not one, but two pages of pizza (many of which have Greek-themed names like Athens, Acropolis, Salonika, Samona, Zeus, Nemea and Zorba) and a page of pastas, including tortellinis, fettuccines, linguines, spaghettis and lasagnas (only one of which is Greek—Pastichio). And beyond the pie and pasta, the choices just keeping going. Calzones, hot subs and sandwiches, gyros, lamb chops, souvlaki ... hungry yet?

Chapala moves in on the Bench

Margarito and Fabiola Marin have opened another of their homegrown-in-Idaho restaurants. The newest Chapala location opened on Vista Avenue and brought the location count up to "#9." Named after Mexico's largest lake, Lago de Chapala in Jalisco, the restaurants dish up traditional Jaliscan cuisine in McCall, Caldwell, Nampa, Garden City, Boise and Hailey.

Mai Thai's Koi Mistress

Oh, how patiently we have been waiting for the newest venture from the Mai Thai gang. Since its expected opening last November, we have made small offerings to the food gods, hoping that the remodeling of the 8th Street location would end, the veiled windows would be wide open and Koi would welcome us into another realm of culinary delight. At long last, rumor has it we can expect a debut mid-month.

Koi, 800 W. Idaho St. Suite 112.
