Re: “To Trigger a Single-Payer Public Option

Most critics of socialism these days don't even know what it is.
It means the government - e.g. people who are chosen by American voters -- is in charge of an enterprise -- it owns the facilities used, sets policies, hires the people who do the work, and pays their wages.
Our public school system is socialized. Public entities own the schools, hire the teachers and administrators, pay their salaries, and so forth.
Most of our police and fire departments are socialized. Our veterans health system is socialized.
So if the right-wing scaremongers have made some Americans terrified of the word "socialism," why don't we abolish all of the above and much more, and let private, for-profit companies come in and run everything. Each of us could pay separately for each separate service, plus profit.
Of course we'd lose whatever influence we now have -- we couldn't "vote out of office" private companies like we can school board members.
You want the police to come if your house is invaded? You'd have to have signed a contract with Cops Inc. and be up to date on your monthly fees.
Your house is burning down? Did you remember to pay Firefighter Inc.'s most recent bill? No? Damn.
You want your kids to be educated? Gotta either come up with private tuition for each one of them from age 5 to 18, or become an unpaid teacher and home-school them.
I'm waiting for Republicans to demand all these changes. But I'm not holding my breath.

Re: “To Trigger a Single-Payer Public Option

Excellent column!!!
If Obama screws this up -- and like you, Ted, I'm not liking what I'm seeing --he will have disillusioned a large percentage of his base, the people who worked so hard for him and got him elected.
Polls show large majorities of (a) the public, (b) doctors, and (c) nurses all favor either a single-payer system or at a minimum, a public option.
People hate health insurance companies and want them GONE!!!
And we love our Medicare! Ask anyone 65 or older.
