Re: “Cheap Joke

I am not a fan of Sarah Palin's politics and was truly horrified by her nomination as a Vice-Presidential candidate. However, the "joke" by Letterman WAS very offensive to "girls and women everywhere". It doesn't make any difference which of her daughter's he was referring to. Unintended pregnancies happen - it doesn't make teenage girls caught in these circumstances bad people - neither should they be subjected to the type of crude sexist humor that Letterman used to get a laugh for HIS own purposes and ratings. An unintended pregnancy or being "knocked-up" as Letterman crudely said, should not be fodder for such sexist and irresponsible "jokes" by comedians. When is the last time you saw a comedian negatively joke about boys or men who are responsible for a girl being "knocked up", with negative stereotypes, or seeing them subjected to ridicule? As many of BW readers may have noticed - most other comedians also said that the "joke" was in bad taste. Finally, Letterman stepped up to the plate, and admitted as much. I can only hope that Bill Cope, whose columns I look forward to reading each week, was writing a second April Fool's column or just wanting to stir the pot to get comments. Hopefully his column was not intended to reflect his real sentiments about how our society "jokes" about girls and women.
