"Locally grown" is a label that seems to be increasingly thrown around, likely as a result of consumer desire for fresher and safer products. The fact is that local refers to where something is produced and has nothing to do with how healthy or safe a product is. The sustainable food movement encompasses more than the location the product is produced and customers who value that should take the initiative to find out where and how their food is grown and distributed. Terms encompassed in this movement are also under defined. I mean what is local? I’ve yet to see an industry standard on a mileage cap and, as Lamm points out, where are the raw materials sourced for food produced locally? If you care, I think you should be your own advocate and educate yourself on the Sustainable food movement, don’t take it out on a food cart vendor who’s letting customers know the hot dogs weren’t shipped on an 18 wheeler across the heartland to land on your plate. They were made by people in our community who, like so many of us, are working to support our families. Words like local, organic, sustainable, fresh and healthy can be mutually exclusive; we all need to remember that as consumers.
