Secretly Filmed Video Reveals Rift Inside Idaho GOP

  • Idaho Republican Party

The latest example of the split in the Idaho GOP hit the Internet this week, when Bonneville County GOP Chairman Doyle Beck released a video of State Republican Chairman Steve Yates criticizing Republican leadership of the Idaho Legislature and the state's most powerful business lobby.

The Idaho Falls Post Register reports the video was covertly filmed by Beck, who claimed leaders of his party are members of "a secret society." The video shows Yates criticizing, among others Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter, Senate Pro Tem Sen. Brent Hill (R-Rexburg), Senate Majority Leader Sen. Bart Davis (R-Idaho Falls) and House Speaker Rep. Scott Bedke (R-Oakley). Yates also had some choice words for Alex LaBeau, executive director of the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry, who was caught up in his own controversy in 2015 when a profanity-laced email containing stinging criticism of Sen. Jeff Siddoway (R-Terreton) was leaked.

Among Yates' comments on the video:
  • "So sick and tired of Mormon leaders from the east coming in and getting on their high horse about this or that."

  • "I’ve seen basically a guy that has put it into a slow gear, let a staff that is not the greatest in the world do more than they’re capable of doing. They botch a veto here, botch an issue there, end up in a special session here, other kinds of stuff."
