September 18, 2017: What to Kow

  • How do you solve a problem like Maria... or Jose, or Lee for that matter?  For one, you batten down the hatches. Those three hurricanes/storms are spinning up trouble in the Atlantic Ocean, with Maria tracking to hit Caribbean islands already devastated by Hurricane Irma. As of this morning, Maria was about 100 miles east of Martinique and 130 miles southeast of Dominica. CNN reports that Hurricane Jose was about 280 miles east-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and Lee, which was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm on Sunday, was about 1,060 miles west of Cape Verde.
  • President Trump is back in New York City's Trump Tower this week, as he prepares for a week full of meetings with foreign leaders and Tuesday's much-anticipated address to the United Nations. Considering Trump has regularly ripped the UN's effectiveness while bemoaning American financial contributions to U.N. operations, dignitaries are anxious to hear what Trump has to say about the U.N.'s role in addressing global terrorism and, specifically, threats from North Korea. The Hill reports that the president will also be meeting with leaders from France and Israel to discuss what the White House says is Iran's "destabilizing behavior" in the Middle East.
  • The investigation continues into a bad September 16 accident near the Boise Spectrum complex of movie theaters and restaurants. That's where Boise Police said a Porsche Spyder, leaving a car show, jumped the curb and injured eleven people. BPD said the driver of the car was cooperating with the investigation.
  • Chesson Hadley shot a 6-under-par 54 at the Hillcrest Country Club Sunday to win the Alberstsons Boise Open, claiming the $180,000 top prize. That puts Hadley in a prime position to secure a full exemption in order to compete on the much-coveted PGA tour.
  • Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale won best drama series and a total of eight awards at the Emmy Awards Sunday night. Other big winners included NBC's Saturday Night Live (winning a total of nine awards including Best Variety Series), HBO's Veep (Best Comedy Series) and HBO's Big Little Lies (Best Limited Series). Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) made history winning for Best Actress in a Comedy. That's her eighth Emmy for acting (she's also picked up three more trophies as a co-producer of Veep).
