Re: “The Dicey Biz of Self-Publishing

Amy, thanks for a good read. I am always interested to see how others do this in the same industry and have LOTS to learn in a shifting market. And BTW, I have hired wonderfully talented best editors, book cover designers, and typesetters for my books, and done some typesetting myself. I think in hindsight, the editing, book cover design, and typesetting are of importance in that order.

In comments--Michael, I disagree. Or maybe it is semantics.

When I looked into publishing my book, I decided against traditional publishing, self-publishing (which is also called vanity publishing), and chose to go the route of independent publishing. Yes, I started my own publishing company, Just Dust Publishers, and publish books of my choosing as well as my own.

The term "self-publishing" has come to mean simply you pay someone to publish your books. I provide the services of "self-publishing", meaning others have to pay me to publish their books, however, I will begin a new traditional publishing company soon and leave the original in place to serve as the self-publishing arm of the company. And, yes, Amy, we are a micro-publisher.

Oh, and now I am making an alliance with a marketing company to find unconventional ways to market our books. It's a fun ride.
