Re: “Kim Bakarani

I think its great that Kim is moving to Rwanda with her family and plans to start a children's library. There are no public libraries in Rwanda at the moment and we urgently need to instill a reading culture - especially in children. I hope more people can start projects such as this one so that children all over Rwanda have access to books. I have to correct Kim on a couple of things though. First, Rwanda does have public/government schools and we are one of the first countries to have universal primary education - meaning that primary school is free for all children. Secondly, there are three official languages in Rwanda - Kinyarwanda, Englsh and French - so there is no wholesale change to English as such. All three languages are taught in schools and the idea is to have multi-lingual graduates, which is a wonderful asset. Also, as far as I know, the mountain gorillas live in protected national parks in the Virunga volcanoes and managed through a successful eco-tourism programme run by the Rwanda tourism board - no one is buying this land. I thought it important that your readers have this information. So Kim, I wish you all the very best with your library project - the children will love it. I hope it will inspire others to do the same. Welcome home!
