Show Review: Starf***er, October 7, Neurolux

A lot of good music being made in Portland. It doesn't take much for Boise to get excited when we learn that some of that music has crossed the Columbia Gorge and the desert and is headed our way. Still, it seems that after a while we'd reason that not every new band merits the reaction of the Ed Sullivan Show audience to the Beatles, so we should keep our cool in check ... at least at first.

But Starf***er deserves every bit of praise they receive. In a city filled with talented musicians, their music stands out as exceptionally well-crafted and intelligent. With a lone bass, extensive synth and two adjacent drumkits, Josh Hodges, Ryan Biornstad and Shawn Glassford brought something new to the wistful electro-pop of their new album, already brimming with energy. Their Tuesday performance at the Neurolux was cathartic and they played with the spirit of a jam session coupled with the foundation of careful song writing. These songs are bizarre, yet oddly compelling, from instrumentation to lyrical imagery. My favorite line is the phrase "German love / I will give it to you," repeated indefinitely.

Starf***er is a bright group. They know their music is high-quality. However, they must also know that they will only rise so far with a name like Starf***er. But its all part of the enigma of the band. They write meaningful, mesmerizing music with the vintage feel of someone who was young in the '80s, something innocent and nostalgic—and then give it the label Starf***er to ensure that this notion is not followed too far.
