More than 100 people gathered at the Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the monument and break ground on a new addition: the Marilyn Shuler Classroom for Human Rights.

While attendees ate food from Kanak Attack and Bombay Grill, listened to music and watched dance performances, they also heard from community leaders and former politicians about the mission of the memorial and the work that still needs to be done to secure the civil rights of every Idahoan.

Speakers included Sarah Woodley, board director for the Wassmuth Center For Human Rights; Tracy Andrus, the president of the Andrus Center for Public Policy and the daughter of former Idaho Gov. Cecil Andrus; and former Idaho Gov. Phil Batt, who spoke about his past difficulties passing human rights legislation through the Idaho Legislature. He also noted current efforts to add language protecting LGBT Idahoans from discrimination in housing, public accommodations and employment is encountering similar resistance.

"Many lawmakers voted to protect their own biases," Batt said about an effort in 2015 to add "gender identity" and "sexual orientation" to the law.

When Woodley spoke, she reminded the crowd that although human rights advancements face constant opposition, it's important to "count the good in our state" as well as the bad.
