Soul Serene, Feb. 15 and 16, Reef

When Jay Multanen (stand-up bass, vocals), Spencer Batt (guitar, vocals), Steve Meyers (guitar, vocals) and Dustin Miller (drums) get together to make music, it generates from a rootsy, folky place to become what a fan dubbed "pot rock." But as with most genre designations, that one offers only a slice of what the band is really about.

Multanen, born and raised in Boise, set his sights on L.A. after graduating from Capital High in 2002. He said while down there, he spent most of his time playing jazz, working as a studio musician and "playing church gigs."

The two shows at Reef this weekend are just the beginning of a long run of Boise shows. As of now, their schedule includes regular appearances at Ha'Penny throughout the summer. Both Reef and Ha'Penny are well-suited venues for the band's soulful folky rock.

Multanen said the band is hoping to go into the studio this summer (possibly in L.A.) to finish up what they hope will be a two-disc release: one acoustic, one electric. But for now, he's happy to be back in Boise.

"L.A.'s great and I love it ... but it's just not for me right now," Multanen said. "[Right now] I really want to have a band with my friends. We all have this united goal, and I really feel like it's the right thing to do. I'm coming back [to Boise] with big plans."
