Thursday 22

Stacey Wayne's Christmas with Elvis

If you're looking for some unusual fun in these days running up to Christmas (or as we call it here at BW, "The Countdown to the Much-Needed Week Off"), there's nothing like an Elvis impersonator for a chance to relive the magic of the King at his peak.

Stacey Wayne, billed as a "premier Elvis impersonator," will be at the Nampa Civic Center on Thursday night in a full concert performance, entertaining the audience with all of Elvis' Christmas and gospel songs.

We don't get many Elvis impersonators around these parts (does that guy from Dread Zeppelin count?), so if you never got to see the king in concert, here's the next best thing. Thankya ver' much.

7:30 p.m. $10. Nampa Civic Center, 311 3rd St. S., Nampa, 468-5555, www.nampaciviccenter.com.

Friday 23

The Idaho Stampede Basketball Toys for Tots Drive

This Friday, the Stampede plays the Dakota Wizards, but basketball fans also have a chance to enjoy something besides great hoops--helping to make a kid's holiday just a bit nicer. Toys should be one of the unalienable rights of childhood, and we're far from the only ones who think so. The Idaho Stampede has been collecting for the U.S. Marine Corp's Toys for Tots, and Friday is the last night of the toy drive. So come out to the game and bring a toy (heck, bring 10) to donate to some child who won't otherwise be receiving much for Christmas. We probably don't even need to relate to you the added incentive that anyone donating a toy at the game will receive a free ticket to a future Stampede game. Everybody wins.

Can't make it to the game? Toys for Tots is taking collections at locations all over the valley, including at Albertson's stores, Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree and other places around the Valley. For more information about the program, visit www.toysfortots.org.

7 p.m. $7-$17. Qwest Arena, 233 S. Capitol Blvd., 388-4667, www.idahostampede.com.

Saturday 24

The Egyptian Theatre Presents The Wizard of Oz

We don't know how The Wizard of Oz managed to get associated with Christmas, and we don't care. The Egyptian is playing the 1939 classic through December 24 and it's a great opportunity to see Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Lion and, of course, the Scarecrow outrun the Wicked Witch of the West up there on the big screen. Oh, yes, and Toto, too.

As if a big-screen screening of The Wizard of Oz wasn't enough, they will also show a Looney Toon classic, A Corny Concerto, starring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.

Showings will likely be full, so get your tickets early. It's only $6 to get in, and a portion of the proceeds goes to St. Luke's Children's Hospital.

Daily through Dec. 24, at 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. $6 all showings. The Egyptian Theatre, 700 W. Main St., 345-0454, www.egyptiantheatre.net.

Free Parking Day Downtown

Got some last-minute shopping to do? Well, shopping downtown just got a little bit easier, at least for the one critical last day before Christmas. Downtown parking garages--Capitol Terrace on the corner of Main and Capitol, Eastman Garage on the corner of 9th and Main, Ninth Street Garage on the corner of 9th and Main, City Center Garage on the corner of 9th and Front, and Boulevard Garage on the corner of Capitol and Front--will offer FREE parking from opening until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Stop procrastinating and head downtown for those last-minute gifts. Or just treat yourself to dinner and a movie. Parking's on them.

Tuesday 27

Chanukah Kosher Deli Party

If the whole "Christmas" vs. "Holiday" debate has shown us nothing else worth seeing, it at least pounded into people's heads that not everyone celebrates Christmas this time of year.

Chanukah begins at sundown on December 25 and the eight days commemorate the burning of the oil. One way to enjoy the Festival of Lights with the community is at the Chanukah Kosher Deli Party at the Chabad Jewish Center. Festivities will include a Menorah lighting, traditional foods like latkes and pastrami, as well as music, games, a raffle and more.

6 p.m. FREE. Chabad Jewish Center, 6114 N. Cape Arago Place, 853-9200. For more information, visit www.jewishidaho.com.
