  • Dr. Chuck Staben on Sun Belt decision to cut U of I: "We are disappointed."

When University of Idaho President Dr. Chuck Staben spoke with Boise Weekly earlier this year, he was preparing to make a presentation to the Sun Belt Conference in an attempt to convince other college presidents that U of I should stay in the conference for Division I football.

"The options are whether we stay with the Sun Belt, play as an independent or possibly join the Big Sky Conference," Staben said at the time.

Now, one of those options is off the table after the Sun Belt Conference announced it was moving forward without the U of I being a part of its 10-team league after the 2017 football season.

“We are disappointed by the Sun Belt’s decision,” Staben said Tuesday in a U of I press release. “But we are optimistic about the options before us and we are continuing to diligently consider our future affiliation as an opportunity to find the stability and full participation we have not experienced in the Sun Belt. We will make a decision in the coming months.”

The U of I will now need to evaluate whether it will play football as an independent or accept an invitation from the Big Sky Conference for the fall 2018 season.
