Re: “Imus' Bad Rap

I am from St. Paul MN, and was sifting through the google news category and saw your article. I completley agree with almost everything you have stated. ALMOST everything. I am not looking for an apology, but I am asking you to be a little more open minded. Not all rap is the rap that you hear blaring bass in the car passing down the street. I to disagree with the 'mainstream' rap that you most likely hear. In fact, I used to only like rock music, but then I heard rap that wasnt demoralizing woman, talking about drugs, being materielistic, or even degrading. I listen to underground rap, which is made by artists who have no pull or effect on the common MTV rap. They write lyrics about deep, thought provoking subjects that are profoundly abstract and would most likely be able to hold there own with many famous poets. The reason why you say that rap is not music is because you have not heard the real rap, the rap that is not affected or swayed to what the 'bandwagon' is doing. The underground artists are the ones that dont care what people think and make music, and most importantly its orginal music. Such indie labels that have rosters of these actual artists and musicians would be most notably, Definitive Jux and Rhymesayers Inc. I am a senior in highschool and for grades am getting A's and B's and have a very large vocabulary, so of course I would not be attractedto such low intelligent rhyme schemes as those created by 50 Cent and Lil' Wayne, but the music made by artists such as Eyedea (a local underground emcee) are amzingly technical and show an remarkable control over the english language. These people wriet music and write lyrics to make enough money for rent so they dont get kicked out onto the streets, if that doesnt push someone to do their absolute best then there almost is no reason for such a genre of rap. That is all I wanted to say. Thank you for your time. Tony Rohr
