The A.K.A.'s, Feb. 18, The Venue

When Mike Ski, vocalist for Philadelphia-based punk band the A.K.A.'s was about 13 years old, his mom bought him a used bass guitar from a guy in a trailer park. Ski and his friends would get together and play their motley instruments loud and fast, leading Ski to become part of the hardcore music scene. The surprise was his 2003 move from hardcore to punk with the A.K.A.'s.

Ski said the switch wasn't easy, but then the A.K.A.'s don't often take the path of least resistance as a rule.

"I guess that's part of our M.O.," Ski said. "We tour with weird tours that don't make the most sense right away." What does make sense, he said, is getting in front of new people. They might not be people who would normally listen to the A.K.A.'s, but Ski doesn't mind.

"Anybody who might remotely like our band, I'm stoked to play for," he laughed.

When their sophomore release, Everybody Make Some Noise, hits shelves mid-March, they're likely to find plenty of people who will more than remotely like them. Ski said he's really proud of the band's efforts.

"[The new album] doesn't sound like anything else out there," he said. "If you liked the first record, it has all those elements, but they're totally weirder."

Ski said one of his favorite tracks is "Knives of 45's." It reminds him of being 13 and playing what he wanted just because he loved to play.

"When you're touring and making records, a million times you lose sight of why you play music. It's good to reel it back in."

Feb. 18, $12, 7 p.m., Wednesday 13, The A.K.A.'s, Creature Feature, Kenotia, Adamant Allies. The Venue, 521 Broad St., BoiseVenue.com.
