Ties of Protection and Safekeeping

When: July 19-Sept. 14 2008
MK Guth: Ties of Protection and Safekeeping, July 19–Sept. 14. Northwest artist MK Guth spent time at BAM in December asking museum visitors to write their responses to the question “What is worth protecting?” on small pieces of fabric that were woven on site into a monumental braid of golden synthetic hair. Guth’s interactive sculpture then traveled to several other cities across the U.S., growing and changing from the actions of visitors. The finished 1,500 foot braid will once again return to BAM and be suspended from the ceiling this summer. The artwork was originally created for the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 2008 Biennial art exhibition in New York City, in which MK Guth was the only Northwest artist selected to be featured.
