Re: “The Other Race

Shea Anderson's portrayal of CIEDRA as being only controversial with some, but supported by a "wide array" of conservationists and local communities in central Idaho is quite inaccurate. For example, the Wood River Journal in Blaine County has come out in opposition to CIEDRA. Similarly, the majority of Stanley residents insisted on convening a special Sunday meeting of the Stanley City Council to express their opposition to CIEDRA, which resulted in Stanley withdrawing its support for the bill. Similarly, 15 Idaho-based conservation groups are signed onto a letter along with 87 conservation groups around the country opposing CIEDRA . The "wide array" of conservationists in Idaho supporting Simpson's bill can be counted on one hand: the Idaho Conservation League, the Wilderness Society, and the Boulder-White Clouds Council. ICL's Rick Johnson is quoted as saying that Simpson is a real advocate for wilderness -- if that is true, then Wilderness Watch and the majority of conservation groups in Idaho will be pleased to work with Simpson to write a real wilderness bill that reflects the protections contained in the Wilderness Act, rather than abandoning those protections altogether as CIEDRA does. If there were really a "wide array" of support for CIEDRA in Idaho, then Simpson would not need to resort to the furtive tactics he's been pursuing to get the bill through Congress, including his stated plan to possibly hide the bill as a rider on the upcoming massive appropriations bill. Apparently Simpson, ICL, and the Wilderness Society recognize that CIEDRA can't stand on its own two feet and its only chance of passing is to hide under the coattails of other legislation. Funny, these groups have vocally deplored efforts to use riders to open up the Arctic Refuge to drilling, but apparently are willing to embrace that same tactic in order to claim a paper victory for their very unpopular CIEDRA. Hmmmm....
