To the Beat of some different drums (and strums)

In 2006, before a show at the United Nations, New York-based Spanish and Flamenco guitar virtuoso Tomas Rodriguez met members of the act that was to go on before him. The first section of the performance carried an African theme, and the second, which Rodriguez was scheduled to play, was based on Spanish guitar. From the first bumps of drums and strums of guitars, the connection was immediate. Rodriguez said, "After the soundcheck, I never left the stage."

As part of Boise State's Global Expressions concert series, Rodriguez will be joined by two of the musicians he gelled with that night, fellow New Yorkers Hasan Bakr (Latin and African percussion) and Kevin Nathaniel Hylton (mbira or "thumb piano").

Rodriguez was originally asked to perform in Boise as a soloist (he spent some of his formative years here), but wanted to take a risk and, instead, bring this new marriage of African music and Spanish guitar. With the incredible talent this trio possesses, it may not be much of a risk at all.

The show debuts in Boise and will be the only opportunity to see the performance this far west for awhile. And even better yet, Bakr, Rodriguez and Hylton will present free educational workshops from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Sept. 19, 8 p.m., $15 general, $10 Boise State faculty and staff, $5 students and seniors. Boise State Special Events Center, University Dr. For more information, call 208-426-5800 or visit finearts.boisestate.edu.

Taking Schooner Tuna's lead, KFCH temporarily drops prices

The Knitting Factory Concert House is offering a $10 ticket deal on six shows currently on sale. Talent buyer Mark Dinerstein said the venue is sympathetic to and affected by the current economic slump just as the rest of the community is, and so the KFCH box office will offer not only $10 ticket deals, but a slew of other specials as well.

The $10 shows are as follows: Sept. 17, Less Than Jake; Sept. 18, Derek Trucks Band; Sept. 19, Geoff Tate Band (of Queensryche); Sept. 22, Filter; Oct. 7, Ill Bill; Oct. 15, Rose Hill Drive.

Tickets must be purchased at the KFCH box office at 416 S. Ninth St. to receive the discount deal. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., later on show nights.
