Re: “To Pay or Not to Pay: That is the Question: Local Performers and the Shadow Economy

I can whole heartedly agree that musicians should be paid, but I agree with a previous poster when he said bands should also have their business together so they are giving a bar owner something worth paying for, I.e. a band that brings people into the place. If a band is providing the service of bringing people in the bar, it's not as hard to get paid because you have some bargaining power. Also, if a band is not doing anything else to bring money in, like selling music and merch, then you're not maximizing your money making opportunities and that's your own fault that you're missing out on those paydays.

For me it works like this, if you want to dictate my song list to fit your bar or occasion, then you have to pay my price. If you tell me I can use your stage to do whatever I want but you can't pay, that's fine, I can make money some other way. Tips, sales, stuff like that, but as soon as you start telling me what I can and can't do, you have to pay.

If you're looking for another little historical nugget from the Boise music scene check out the Smallpond compilation which was released in 1990. Click here to listen to it or download it, and it all free!
