Tour de Fat is Back

Celebrate everything with two wheels

It’s time to bow down to the three B’s: bikes, beer and Boise.

The annual Tour de Fat is back on Saturday, Aug. 22 in Ann Morrison Park, bringing with it a cavalcade of two-wheeled celebration, encouraging everyone to leave their cars at home and honor everything bike, courtesy of the kind folks at New Belgium Brewing Company.

The party gets started with the costumed bike parade, which sends riders into the streets of downtown for what organizers call a “rolling carnival of creativity.” Parade registration begins at 10 a.m., with wheels-down at 11 a.m.

Ann Morrison Park will be the hub of activity throughout the day, with live musical performances beginning at 1:30 p.m., featuring March Fourth Marching Band, Sean Hayes, Squirm Burpee Circus, The Sprockettes and Dovekins.

Keeping with Tour de Fat’s environmentally friendly message, performances will be done on a solar-powered stage that's decorated with recycled materials and brought to Boise on trucks fueled by biofuel.

Volunteers from the Southwest Idaho Mountain Bike Association will be hocking beer (from New Belgium, of course) and assorted merchandise. Participants are encouraged to spend freely, since all proceeds from beer and merchandise sales go to SWIMBA.

The Boise Bicycle Project will also be on hand throughout the day collecting assorted bike parts, which the nonprofit organization will use to rebuild bikes for kids from low-income families and refugees.

The afternoon’s highlight will be Carpocalypse Now, a funeral procession for the car donated by a local resident who has volunteered to give up their car for one year. In exchange the now-carless individual will be given a custom made commuter bike from Black Sheep. The procession begins at 3:30 p.m.

Representatives and vendors from throughout the community will be on hand throughout the day, and organizers stress that everyone is welcome. Even the non-bikers.
