Turkey Facts 

1. Wild turkeys can fly for short distances up to 55 mph. Commercially raised turkeys cannot fly.

2. Turkeys do not see well at night.

3. Turkeys' heads change colors when they become excited.

4. The male turkey is called a tom and has a beard. The female turkey is called a hen and sometimes, they have beards, too.

5. Gobbling turkeys can be heard a mile away on a quiet day. Those you hear are males. Hens do not gobble, they make a clicking noise.

6. Turkeys have heart attacks. The U.S. Air Force was once doing test runs of breaking the sound barrier when some nearby turkeys dropped dead with heart attacks.

7. For their first meal on the moon, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin ate roast turkey in foil packets.
