Two Loons for Tea, April 4, Neurolux

Seattle-based Jonathan Kochmer and Sarah Scott began their musical career together under the band name Loon. Discovering that another band already performed under that moniker, Kochmer and Scott still wanted to incorporate the loon (presumably both meanings). Scott lived next to an "uptight tea house" and said she used to imagine "shaking up the old biddies" by walking in with Kochmer and two giant birds in tow and stating, "Two loons for tea, please." Very Mad Hatter and Alice.

Kochmer and Scott's streak of adventure and illusion comes through in their music. On their new release, Nine Lucid Dreams, they employed new recording techniques and improvisation, allowing musical and lyrical inspiration to come from different sources and they let their sound soar. And the name of the new album comes from no less curious a place than the tea-house fantasy.

"We realized the lyrical content of the album was a lot about departure," Kochmer said. They wanted to call the album Songs about Leaving, only to discover that name, too, was already taken.

"In revisiting the songs, we found that the lyrics and the mood of the music were sort of lucid dreaming. There were 11 songs on the record, so we, of course, called it Nine Lucid Dreams," he said with a deadpan delivery.

Though the two principals are joined both in studio and on stage by a number of other musicians, it's Kochmer's playing and arrangements coupled with Scott's sweet ethereal voice that define the band and its sound. (Check out "Sunset Room" at Scott said they won't need to change the name to include four or five birds since the duo works so harmoniously together. She added, "We're commitment-phobic anyway."
