Urgent: Most non-heinous Wednesday Night Feast 

Quick--What are you doing tonight? Watching Kenny "The Roaster" Rogers and the Detroit Tigers cheat their way to another World Series victory, you say? Lame. But if you hurry--no guarantees, mind you--you might be able to squeeze into one of the final seats at a gourmet feast being put on by local nonprofit culinary training center Life's Kitchen.

Sure, $75 may seem a bit steep for a same-day commitment, but consider this: First, the only non-Red Cross blood bank in town, Biomat USA on Overland, pays $30 to first-time donors--you're almost halfway there! And second, the menu at Life's Kitchen's gourmet dinner is such an embarrassment of riches, and for such a good cause, it's easily worth the other $45 just to hear someone say what's on the menu. Among the appetizers, served "Butler style," will be sautéed apple and foie gras sandwiches, fried manchego cheese, deviled quail egg canapé (canapé = fancy language for a little crusty pastry) and a miniature Idaho buffalo patty melt. As for entrees, every diner will have the opportunity to dive into grilled vegetable Wellington (a dreamy pastry with autumn veggies, wild mushrooms and Idaho cheese), Idaho trout fritters, rack of pork with a shallot and mustard demiglace gouda potato tart and carrot and onion flan. Plus, there'll be a selection of seasonal ales ... and an eight-layer chocolate cake soaked in coffee syrup for dessert. Eesh.

According to the folks at Life's Kitchen, they prefer to have their fund-raising feasts full and booked by the day they take place. But read that list again ... yeah, it's worth a try.

Foodbank goes Bowling

For the ninth straight year, the Idaho Foodbank is calling on local artists, aspiring potters and ... well, basically anyone with a little bit of time and the slightest artistic inkling to help them wrangle up 1,000 decorated bowls for their Empty Bowls fund. Whether you toss it yourself, paint it and cook it at a local business or just craft and decorate your bowl out of something other than clay, the Foodbank will accept it--provided it's food-safe and reusable. To ensure someone will be eating out of it, deliver it directly to the Foodbank offices at 3562 S.
