Valley Regional Transit Partners with Lyft to Get Riders to and from Bus Stops

The staff at Regional Valley Transit, which runs Boise's public bus lines, know there's room for improvement in their system.

"We're behind our peers in terms of transit," VRT Principal Planner Stephen Hunt told BW last July. "And we're not talking about spectacular cities of transit Nirvana. We're talking about Reno, Nevada, and Spokane, Washington, which invest four to five times more than what we do on per-capita transportation."

On Jan. 22, VRT announced a new program that should combat some of the city's transit woes: a partnership with the rideshare company Lyft to shuttle residents between 14 pre-approved bus stops and their homes for a $2 flat fee. The new service is set to start Monday, Jan. 28.

“There is often considerable distance a commuter must travel to or from their final destination when taking the bus,” wrote VRT Mobility Collaborative Program Director Kaite Justice in a press release. “This distance, referred to as first and last mile, can be an inconvenience or even a deterrent to using public transportation.”

Commuters looking to use the new service can simply download the Lyft app, set up an account and use the promo code VRT19 to request a ride. VRT will cover up to $6 of the fare, leaving riders with a $2 fee as long as they're in VRT's designated service area.

“Lyft is excited to be partnering with Valley Regional Transit to enhance connections to the regional ValleyRide bus network,” said Bakari Brock, senior director of city partnerships at Lyft, in a press release. “This program will improve access to public transportation, and help decouple access to convenient regional mobility from auto ownership.”
