Vantage Point

Repeatedly seeing the president shot from different points of view might appeal to some, but when it comes to this movie, after seeing the event rewind and happen time and again, it becomes overkill.

While making a speech in Spain before an historic summit, the president of the United States (William Hurt, The Hulk) is struck down by an assassin. After having taken a bullet for the president only months before, a noted Secret Service agent (Dennis Quaid, The Rookie) must piece together clues to track down the shooter(s).

The premise here is brilliant. Everyone—the audience, media, Secret Service, etc.—saw something different so the film shows one person's viewpoint then literally rewinds and shows someone else's. Like a Dan Brown novel, the movie unfolds one piece at a time, a trick that should keep viewers intrigued to the end. However, the vantage points aren't necessarily first person as they wander in and out of what each particular person has actually seen.

Misfires in the timing of some events are glaring, but they don't really slow down the story. The stellar cast featuring Matthew Fox (TV's Lost), Forrest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) and Sigourney Weaver (Heartbreakers) is top notch.

Vantage Point may not quite be the brilliant mystery its previews claim it is, but in the vein of the Bourne movies, it's one of the better heart-pounding action flicks to come along in a while and should keep you interested for its 90-minute runtime.
