Various, Thursdays, Modern Hotel; Pulse-a-Palooza, Sept. 5-6, Boise State

The Modern is a swank little boutique hotel that's the perfect place to put up out-of-town guests, and the hotel bar is the perfect place to entertain anyone. Every Thursday during nice weather, some of Boise's best local musicians turn the courtyard into a smashing little outdoor venue, making it a must-stop on First, Second, Third and Fourth Thursdays. On September 4 and 18, enjoy the stylings of guitar masters Ned Evett and Bill Coffey; and on September 11 and 25, enjoy David Andrews, hot on the heels of his Live at the VAC release.

After a chill evening (chill being the operative word—take a sweater) with Evett and Coffey on Thursday, Sept. 4, pick up the pace at Pulse-a-Palooza on Friday, Sept. 5 and Saturday, Sept. 6. This two-day music fest features 14 acts and partitions the playing time between locals and nationals covering rock, reggae, rap and hip-hop genres. On Friday, the rock and reggae party starts at noon and runs until 10 p.m. with locals Le Fleur (who did a splendid job opening for Built To Spill at the Knitting Factory on Sunday, Aug. 31), Hillfolk Noir and Heibarger followed up by Baptized by Fire (Long Island, N.Y.), Midwest Dilemma (Omaha, Neb.), Nuborn Tribe (Portland, Ore.) and Everyday Prophets (Portland, Ore.). On Saturday, it's all about rap and hip-hop from 2 p.m.-10 p.m. with Boise boy Chris Stiles (whose CD It's On Me is NSFW but is a unique mix of instrumentation, raps and vocal manipulation), Qwel (Chicago, Ill.), The Saturday Knights (Seattle, Wash.) and Cunninlynguists (Lexington, Ky.).

Sept. 4, 7 p.m., FREE. Modern Hotel, 1314 W. Grove St., 208-424-8244. Sept. 5-6, noon-10 p.m.; 2 p.m.-10 p.m., FREE, Boise State Intramural Field,
