Re: “Take a Village

This is the most tragic story to come out of Boise. Shouldn't the goal of the volunteer be teaching and integration for a vulnerable population? There are so many cultural disparities in the way children are raised. It is NOT a volunteer's responsibility (or a religious institution for that matter) to make judgments and take aggressive action in these sensitive cases. There are many POSITIVE scenarios that could've come out of this; parenting classes, intervention by the Resettlement Agency or elders from the Burundi community, counseling services, and support from the children's' school (to name a few). Give her the TOOLS to LEARN what is expected of her as a parent in the UNITED STATES, in BOISE, Idaho. She had been here less than 2 years, taken from her community, with no English. It is also very clear that gaps in initial services (i.e. inconsistent use of interpreters) led to the involvement of CPS. Finally, thank you to Kathy Tidwell for reminding us that "mental illness is a cultural construct." This case does not have to be closed for good. I say give Christiana her kids back!
